Shadow Art Fair a Roaring Success

YPSIDIXIT is grateful to Mark Maynard and his team of local artists for organizing what turned out to be one amazingly fun, lively, interesting party, full of music, excellent beer, cool things to see, and an unparalleled opportunity to pick up some very nice gifts.

The place was mobbed last night. It was difficult to walk around due to the crush of people. There was a great range of attendees; the hipster contingent, a number of older locals, Depot Town Mayor Forrest Karnopp (and dad), and an assortment of musicians, performance artists, and everyday folks like Y. and the FF.

Y. had a wonderful time chatting with Naia Venturi and the kindly proprietor of the Rocket and local photographer Matt Callow and a winsome Detroit artist. As Y. and the FF enjoyed an Old 22 and surveyed the bustling scene, they were accosted by a malevolent Santa and Y. was informed sternly that she'd been a bad girl. Santa was offering "photo with Santa" Polaroids for $5, advertised by a sign promising "a quality keepsake for generations to come."

Y. bought some beautiful tea towels, a photograph I'd had my eye on for ages, some postcards and fun buttons, a lovely purse, and as a splurgette for myself (the rule is that when buying gifts you may buy one item for yourself) an absolutely charming orange-flower necklace with a big silver bug on it.

Y. loved seeing people she knew and mingling in such an upbeat, creative, lively, music-filled atmosphere. Best time I've had in weeks. Kudos to the organizers for their success in creating an event that so many folks clearly thoroughly enjoyed!

Y. missed the former Shadow Art Fair due to work but was told that this time it was about twice as large as the previous one.

Y. also heard talk that there might be another Shadow Art Fair come summer, and that it might expand into the Corner Brewery's inviting outfoor area, which would be splendid.

I'm told that it was so full last night that they had to turn people away at the door. This afternoon's attendance was more of a dull roar.

I like being able to buy things for friends from friends.

Yessir, we got there around 9 and it was packed to the rafters.

Yep, I like the way you say it: "buy things for friends from friends."

Davy Rothbart read last night and, call me a fogey, but it struck me, judging by the audience response, that the novelty of making a public spectacle out of publicly reading voyeuristically-salvaged trash has passed its apogee.

I drove by on Friday night and there was a line of people waiting to get inside so I figured it would be better if I went back on Saturday. It was better on Saturday but even then, it was a little too crowded for me. I did enjoy looking at all the stuff people had for sale and I bought a couple of things for gifts.

Basically nothing seems worth thinking about. I haven't been up to much these days. I just don't have much to say right now. I can't be bothered with anything , but whatever.
