YPSIDIXIT enjoys listening to Glenn Beck, raving talk show guy, over coffee on rainy Saturday mornings while gearing up to do chores. Today Mr. Beck railed against the proposed ban on trans fats, saying of soy milk "of course it's organic--they don't need pesticides because even the bugs hate it!" He also questioned the Japanese creation of the "fembot." "The Japanese have cornered the global market in sushi, Godzilla, hybrids, and robots. Now, that's what I'd focus on if I were a country. Yeah. Raw fish...radiation monsters...the fembot...and, oh, if we have time, we'll reinvent the car. Speaking as a white guy, who the Japanese outscore in every imaginable area, including annual income and intelligence tests, I just wish the Japanese would use their brains to...cure something! Psoriasis! Cure that! We don't need the fembot!"

Y. loves talk radio, the most enjoyable form of performance art I can think of. You'll excuse me now though; it's Appliance Doctor time!

Memo from the Appliance Doctor: "The commonly-held notion that food in the fridge is good for a week? Totally false! The maximum time you can keep food in the food in the fridge is 3 to 4 days. That's it! Now, I want you to go measure the temperature in your fridge and give me a call."

Also, it's time to aerate and take core samples from your lawn. "Root health is grass health."

Y. is taking a break from chores (dishes, sterilizing pipes, polishing my lovely copper pot till it glows) to report that it's not even 10:30 and I've already learned a treasure-house of appliance-related information, most of it concerning appliances I neither have nor want, like dryers and dishwashers. Anyways:

--Furnaces don't last 30 years the way they used to. These days? 10, 15 years max. Reason? Thinner-gauge metal is used these days.

--To avoid condensation in your covered outdoor AC unit, leave an inch of space between the cover and the ground.

--Something to consider: appliance service contracts.

--The most dangerous appliance in your home? The dryer. Cause of thousands of house fires a year.

--Propane vs. natural gas: propane is infinitely more dangerous. It's heavier and more flammable than natural gas, and a guy in a cabin in Canada blew his cabin off its foundation while fixing coffee one day. His dad was blown out of the cabin and knocked unconscious. The son, whose bare feet were covered in blood blisters, wrapped his burned dad in a plastic tarp and walked 15 miles to a logging road to get help. In the winter.

No propane for me! Y. admires the A.D. He's taken a lint-dry subject, appliance repair, and turned it into an entertaining, popular, three-hour-long weekly radio show. And he's so earnest about it. It's fun.

furnaces ...get three bids I got one bid for 3200, but got the job done for 1300.00 incl the chimeny liner, furnace and ALL the parts ,took the guy one day .

I just put a board over the top of my a.c. I found that a cover makes it a great rodent home ...

dryers , use all metal vent it's code .....as short a run as is possible with as few turns as possible one turn = 3 feet in length or more ...

service contracts are only as good as who covers it ...I had( a CO leak )had to get another company to come out after the first one, as they were, worthless...
I buy used appliances , like a washer dryer matched set with a warranty for 200.00 WoW

Propane , it's all you can get if ya don'ts got no natural , don't even need lectricity ,but can run a generator off'n it ...so it ain't all bad
mostly all RV's are propane , BBQ grilles , forklifts, rural homes , and some electric generation stations in outpost areas....

Mr. Friday: you got a good deal on that furnace. A lot cheaper than the usual cost, so far as I've heard.

Yeah, I think the A. D. was a bit alarmist about the dangers of propane. Millions use propane every day with no problem. The Farmer's Market folks drag out their propane heaters about this time of year, not three feet away, which I personally find a bit wasteful but which obviously are safe, useful sources of energy.

Iss: Oh, he was just raving. I like soymilk, too, on muesli. Or just as a drink. It doesn't fare well in cooking gravies, though, unlike regular milk. But it's good otherwise.

actually I find that some foods are only better after 3 or 4 days and ....some bachelors I know wait till fuzz is growing on the food to toss it .... (kimschi(sp) comes to mind ...)
