YPSIDIXIT sent this NYT article about feeding kids to her sensible and smart sis.

"Just a few years ago, giving lunch to a 1-year-old was a simple matter of popping open a jar of the Gerber mush du jour. But many parents now feed their children with the precision of chemists and the passion of Alice Waters, and expect sitters to do the same."

and

"Nicole Perez recently baby-sat for a 4-year-old boy in Boca Raton, Fla., who requested waffles and Oreos for dinner. “Obviously, I did not oblige his requests, despite his tantrums,” she said, explaining that she considered providing a healthy dinner part of her job. The result? “I was asked not to come back,” Ms. Perez said."

As a person who has a lot of food issues, I worry a lot when I read articles like this because it sounds to me like fear of obesity is probably going to set up a lot of kids for some serious eating disorders later in life. Yes, it is good to feed kids a healthy diet and it is good to have a discussion with child care providers about what kinds of food to feed the kid. But it really isnt the end of the world if the baby sitter gives the kid something different.

*shrug*

I agree. It ain't that big a deal. The sitter getting fired for daring to serve something other than Oreos for dinner was choice.

You have to wonder how any mom would allow a 4-year-old to eat that for dinner. It's clear to me who's really in charge.

Well, all things in moderation. My kids have eaten Oreos. They've also had organic veggie lasagna and at the 4th of July, even KFC. By outright banning things, you make it alluringly attractive; by allowing kids to be the decision makers, they get a false sense of direction. In our house, the boys still get choices - chicken or pork tonight? The other they'll see tomorrow. One thing we don't do is force the kids to finish their plates or withhold dessert until the peas are gone.
YD can tell you that our Opa used to move my dessert (applesauce w/ a maraschino cherry half in the middle) further and further away until I ate my rutabagas or similarly offensive root vegetable. I was in tears by the end. (That was in Harbor Beach, BTW...)

'Further' or 'farther'?

by allowing kids to be the decision makers, they get a false sense of direction

That is a good point and a good counter-point for the mantra of always (key word always) giving kids choices.

Yes ma'am, I vividly remember the retreating applesauce.

I'll be sure to include slime-basted rutabagas, and oh so flavorful hutspot, among the Thanksgiving side dishes this year, for memories' sake. And applesauce with cherry, waaay over on the piano. Now waaaaaay over in the kitchen....

"further" is for physical distance, "farther" is for time.

I agree that so much micro-managing of food can lead to food battles and issues. We've had plenty of flopdoodle meals...and just hit the veggies or dairy or whatever the next meal.

I'm bringing my own applesauce to Thanksgiving and will safely ensconce it on my lap the entire meal.

Yep, food battles and issues, and just general neurosis. Just be thankful and eat it, already.

I like Flopdoodle Meal. Easy, fast, convenient.

Infinite variations, too....

Favorite: starling spit and walnut hulls on toast.
