YPSIDIXIT is going outside into this beautiful day in a minute to set up her Winter Indoor Gardening setup. I have 100 pounds of potting soil, an infinite number of containers, three new auto-reflecto-shields, and leftover seeds. It'll be a first for me to grow vegetables indoors in the winter. Y. loves mucking around in the dirt, so it'll be fun setting up all my containers. It's also plant-bring-indoors time, so I'll have to find a spot for my lovely 6-foot topiary hibiscus trees in their pots, and give 'em a shot of fertilizer. I wonder if you can sprout lentils. I have lentils from here to eternity. It would be interesting to see what a lentil...bush...shrub...plant...looks like. At any rate, it's dirt time.

When I picked up the dirt at Meijer's, I also got a couple of those swirly-fluorescent eco-bulbs, as a result of discussions in the sustainability group.

They have a five-year warranty! I put one in the lamp I use the most, my reading lamp next to the couch.

It was brighter than the incandescent bulb it replaced, and contrary to fears I didn't find the light quality to be too "cold" at all. It's fine.

It uses a measly 10 watts! Considering that 24% of one's electricity use is for lighting, if I replace all my incandescents with these swirlies, I'll save a lot of money. I plan to pick up more next time I'm at Meijer's. It's swirlies for me!

I think the compact flourescent light is just fine. It doesn't seem cold at all to me. Plus, they just never burn out. Since Christmas, I've replaced almost every bulb in the house (including over the sink & stove) but not one has burned out. But even before that, over the past TWO years, I'd installed a few in the hallway and in the basement, and all of them are still burning on...

Yes, you can definitely sprout lentils. I have a good recipe for a sprouted lentil salad.

Nope, it doesn't seem "cold" to me either. My goodness, those are long-lived bulbs; I hope mine last as long. I like 'em. Gonna get more.

A sprouted lentil salad! I've never heard of such a thing, but it looks absolutely delicious.

That was kind of a dumb question about whether you an sprout them...they're seeds, after all. Hmm, seems as though you can create sprouts in just a couple of days. I enjoy sprouts and will have to try this; thanks for the mention, Lisa!

Hmm...the Sprout People recommend as "music to sprout seeds by" Thelonious Monk and the Grateful Dead.

I wonder if my sprouts would tolerate The Appliance Doctor.

My goodness, there is a ton of information on that Sproutpeople site...and so much humor that it makes me think sprouts are good for one's mental health.

The Easy Sprout: "It came to the inventor Gene Monson in a dream in the late 1970's and he has spent much of his life since spreading the word."

Random input on spiraly bulbs - I purchased my first spiraly bulb in January 2001 for a lamp of mine, and have yet to replace it (and yes, it still works). I am in love with spiraly bulbs, and have 3 bulbs to replace (2 of which are burnt out at the moment) until I achieve complete spiraly-bulb takeover.

2001!! Gadzooks! OK, that tears it: it's Meijer's this weekend for a spirally-bulb stock-up. They're about $5. For a bulb that lasts five years and counting, it's a total bargain and actually cheaper than incandescent bulbs. I think they're brighter than incandescents, anyways. And 10 teeny watts!
