UP FOR A CHALLENGE? Try finding a copy of the Weekly World News in downtown Ann Arbor. It simply can't be done. I've looked hither. I've looked yon. No dice. Guess I'll have to schlep out to some supermarket somewhere later; even Borders informed me, coolly, "We don't carry tabloids." Phooey.

Ooh! Did you check the gas station at Main and Williams?

Posted by: Katy at 20 september 2006 12:14

I have not! One moment, please! Lunchtime bike trip time!

Posted by: Laura at 20 september 2006 12:33

Phooey. They don't carry it, though they had no fewer than two guitar magazines.

Neither did the party store at Main and Ann or the one at Main and Summit.

And I had to repeat the title for two of the gentlemen I asked. It's mind-boggling that anyone would be unfamiliar with this renowned publication.

It's not downtown Ann Arbor, but I think Meijer on Carpenter Road usually has it in the check-out line.

Posted by: srah at 20 september 2006 13:57

I bet they do; and that's on the way home, on the #5 or #6. Thanks, Srah!

Posted by: Laura at 20 september 2006 13:59

They do have a website.

Posted by: tom at 20 september 2006 14:37

Yep, I've enjoyed reading it, though it looks as though they wait 6 months or so before posting articles. My favorite is Ed Anger and Dotti, America's Most Outspoken Advice Columnist.

Posted by: Laura at 20 september 2006 14:38

My favorite headline is "Gypsy Curse Turns Entire Supreme Court Bench Liberal".

Posted by: tom at 20 september 2006 14:39

I loved that one too, complete with authentic photo!

Y'know, people put down the WWN, and they have their share of alien-abduction stories, but in reading through the articles I noted with pleasure and surprise a reference to the Edda. Now, as kind readers know, this is an epic poem based on Norse mythology, and it ain't everyone who's heard of it. It takes, in my estimation, a pretty literate person to even know what the Edda is. So there are some pretty sharp folks writing for the WWN.

Or mebbe I'm wrong and the Edda is as familiar to folks as Deputy Dawg. At any rate.

Posted by: Laura at 20 september 2006 14:46

What's a Deputy Dawg?

(That was originally going to be a "Familiar as Deputy Dog? Let's pretend we're not familiar with Deputy Dog! Ha ha ha!"-style not-funny joke, until I realized that I actually don't know who Deputy Dawg is. Some kind of Hanna-Barbera cartoon character, I think, but I can't picture him!)

Posted by: srah at 20 september 2006 16:49

I spelled Dawg wrong (right?) twice. Boo.

Wikipedia to the rescue!

Posted by: srah at 20 september 2006 16:50

Srah, Deputy Dawg was the main influence on my childhood and personality development, to this day.

Benign and dopey, he was the deputy in a sepia-tinted Southern village. His pals were the beret-wearing Vince van Gopher, Muskie Muskrat, and the moustached Sheriff.

You can see some screenshots to get the flavor of DD here. I checked YouTube but didn't see any episodes there, nuts.

Posted by: Laura at 20 september 2006 16:58

DD tagline: "Hit's poss-i-byule...."

Posted by: Laura at 20 september 2006 17:02

Thanks for the cartoon ejjumacation!

Posted by: srah at 20 september 2006 17:21

I think I'm mixing up Deputy Dawg and Huckleberry Hound. :(

Posted by: Sandy at 20 september 2006 20:38

Sandy: Deputy Dawg has a hat.

Y. recently found to her astonishment that the AF had no notion of Deputy Dawg. He was raised in South Lyon, and Y., in the next-door Mt. Clemens.

The AF expounds upon the wonders of the TV show Land of the Lost, unknown to Y., and Y. tries without success to convey to him the wonder of Deputy Dawg.

This cultural chasm, between two people raised virtually in each other's backyard, baffles Y.

Srah: You're welcome! Deputy Dawg, from a simpler time in cartoon history, was a bumbling force for good.

I suspect there might be a possibility that they would carry it at ACME if several people agreed to be somewhat faithful. Ask Nina, she might be amenable. (There might however be distribution or quantity issues.)
Meanwhile I'm trying to empty out some space, does anyone have a creative idea of what to do with three or four short stacks of classic 80's and 90's WWN besides recycling?

Posted by: stella at 21 september 2006 07:52

DECOUPAGE!! (or however it's spelled) - you could decorate something, anything, with cut out pictures, maybe a few crazy headlines and some sort of clear glue/sealant. I haven't done it myself, but it's on my "fun things to do when I get the chance" list.

I think a coffee table would be particularly fun, but you could also do smaller scale a la picture frame, or just cover a foam core board and call it wall art.

Posted by: Katy at 21 september 2006 09:57

Stella: You could Freecycle it. Or let a local biker relieve you of those pesky stacks. The weekend's comin' up and I need some reading material, and I'd love to read your WWNs!

Though I love Katy's idea of decoupage.Yep, a decoupaged coffee table with a protective sheet of glass on top would be lovely.

Any luck with the Weekly World News?

Posted by: srah at 21 september 2006 21:34

Srah: Yes, ma'am; I took your suggestion and stopped by Meijer's. Sure 'nuff, they had 'em.

Highlight: "Horse Sense, by Lester the Typing Horse (Once a sideshow attraction, he's now the world's leading wellness expert!)"

Posted by: Laura at 21 september 2006 21:43

Ok we could do an unofficial freecycle so if you want me to put some out for you email me stellamagdalenatyahoo. I would love to do something like the decoupage idea I'll keep a few but I fear I'm too overhomeworked and lame so if someone else has the time.....

Posted by: Anonymous at 22 september 2006 09:49

hmm, my last comment disappeared but the upshot was, that yes while I'll save a few for future projects such as a potential decoupage or whatnot, if someone wants to do an unofficial freecycle email me stellamagdalenatyahoo. I am near big city bakery.

Posted by: stella at 22 september 2006 10:50

Stella: I'm so sorry; I must have inadvertently deleted your comment while clearing out spam. My mistake. I'd love to pick up your WWNs and will email you.

I haven't been up to much these days. Today was a loss. Nothing seems important. I've just been letting everything happen without me these days.
