A KIND READER sends along a bit of satire published in the Eastern Echo.

You be the judge.

really bad, not funny or even insulting. the echo has long been a wasteland of shitty writing and even worse spell-checking. the type of people that write for that rag have a great future in middle management

With no disrespect intended, certainly, to the kind reader who sent the link, I too didn't find it funny or particularly well-written. But to each his own.

Someone a little touchy? If the Echo is as horrible as you say, I would hate to see how bad the University of Michigan and Michigan State papers are. The Eastern Echo last year took home eight Division 1 MCPA awards. In general excellence, the Echo finished second, ahead of both the University of Michigan and Michigan State. Such mindless drivel the Echo puts out, how dare they.

Though I've read many stories I've admired in the Echo, often making a point of linking to them, I did not find this one good in conception or execution. But one good or bad story does not make a paper.

I didn't know the Echo beat out MSU and U-M. Something to be proud of.

That comment was not directed at you Laura. You have always been very objective about the Echo. Many of us sided with you during the "interview fiasco." Our Editor in Chief this year would not have printed that baseless reply bashing you.

I am a writer for our Entertainment editor and the guy was just having fun. He works his ass off at that paper (having like five jobs there) and I think that letter was just his way to have a little fun. Everyone I have talked to thought it was pretty funny. Of course if you are a Bush fan, there is no way you would ever find it even the least bit amusing.

To each his own I agree, but baseless bashing of the Echo by "lmw" is just ignorant and classless.

Thanks for your comment. Ah, yes, the interview....fiasco. At any rate, may I ask, what is the MCPA?

Posted by: Laura at 21 september 2006 13:19

i wouldn't call it "baseless" exactly -- a couple years ago you ran a headline that mentioned something about the "War in Irap." i'm as oppossed to most of Bush's policies about as much as anyone who would take the time to read a blog like this, but liberal or not this article just wasn't funny/smart/amusing/anything. sorry you took it so personally.

congrats on second place though

The MCPA is the Michigan Collegiate Press Association. I do not know off the top of my head how many Division 1 papers participate, but the Echo constantly places in the top three in many categories every year.

Last year, the Echo was also a finalist for a Pacemaker (the collegiate equivalent of the Pulitzer). The Echo has won 12 Pacemakers since 1970.

Mistakes happen in every paper. Nobody is perfect. However, a headline like that should have never made it past the page copy editors.

This year's current Editor in Chief is very hands on, unlike in previous years. The Echo this year is guaranteed to surprise some people.

The Detroit Free Press has even been surprised. Just this past week they dropped off several bundles of free papers around the EMU campus in Echo placeholders.

The Echo is a respected publication and to say that it is a "rag" and that writers will likely end up "middle management" is childish and classless.

Heh. What an unfortunate name for an award. It suggests that the heart of the recipient paper needs a life-support device.

Thanks for the link. I checked out the MCPA site and found this giant list of charming small Michigan newspapers, many with quaint, ol'-timey names like the Vigilance and the Advance and the Exponent (the Exponent?)

Posted by: Laura at 21 september 2006 13:35

Some particularly charming ones:

HOMER-Homer Index
LOWELL-Lowell Ledger
MANISTEE-Manistee News Advocate
MARQUETTE-The Mining Journal
ORTONVILLE-County Line Reminder
ROCHESTER HILLS-Suburban Lifestyles (ick!)
SHEPHERD-Shepherd Argus (lovely old-time name)
ST. JOSEPH/BENTON HARBOR-The Herald-Palladium (mellifluous!)
VASSAR-Vassar Pioneer Times
YALE-Yale Expositor
WYANDOTTE—Wyandotte Echo
NORTHERN MICHIGAN UNIVERSITY- The North Wind
ALBION COLLEGE-The Pleiad (what on earth is a "pleiad"? I've only seen that in the plural to describe a group of stars)
MONROE COUNTY COMMUNITY COLLEGE-The Agora (purty hifalutin for one of the smaller community colleges...)
MICHIGAN TECHNOLOGICAL UNIVERSITY-Michigan Tech Lode
KIRTLAND COMMUNITY COLLEGE-The Paper

well maybe the problem is timing -- while the Echo may not currently be a "rag" (i'm not sure) it has in the past been a paper rife with simple spelling and grammar mistakes, uninformed opinion pages, extremely poor graphic design, and comics that make garfield look brilliantly funny by comparison. i look forward to seeing all the changes you've made this year.

i don't think i'm going to change your mind or vice versa. of course since you work there you'll defend it -- very noble -- but i feel comfortable siding with notable teachers and admins from the english department, campus life, grad school, etc, in saying that the echo is mostly garbage. i don't hang out on campus anymore but if i come across an echo this year i'll give it an honest look, i promise.

also, i really like "the lode" for the name of a paper -- maybe i'll send my kids to tech

Posted by: lmw at 21 september 2006 14:25

I also like "The Lode," and the evocative "County Line Reminder," which immediately brings to mine a typical rural Michigan scene of vast farm fields stretching away under a big sky.

The phrase "County Line Reminder" also reminds me for some reason of the fact that rural telephone networks--independent neighbor networks, not from any phone company--often used the top strand of wire in barbed wire fences as the telephone wire.
