Freecycle GOLD!

YAY! YPSIDIXIT just won the Freecycle JACKPOT! A brass kerosene lamp! Just what I wanted! Y. told the kind giver she was trying to make her home more sustainable and less electricity-dependent. This kind person said she liked that, making me feel even better! Kerosene lamp! Yay! I'll add a photo to this post when I arrive home.

Actually I prefer the name "hurricane lamp." Sounds more bracingly survivalist.

Whistling my way to the post-apocalypse! Where I'll cozily read by the light of my Hurricane Lamp!

...and maybe even toast a post-apocalyptic marshmallow over top of it.

Hmm, I wonder if that sniper dude in the paper mill tower can see my lamplight from there.

(considers)

Nah.

(toasts another marshmallow)

Do you have a URL for freecycling?

(sniper dude???)

Tom: There are two local freecycle groups, one in AA and one in Ypsi. Each has their advantages. The AA group offers more stuff. The Ypsi group has cleverer Yahoo handles (my favorite: "ypsidaisy"). Anyways, it's easy to hop on board:

AA: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/AnnArbor_eCycle/
Ypsi: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/YpsilantiFreecycle/

Also, there's a relatively new freecycle group in Saline-Pittsfield Twp. (I'm a moderator): http://groups.yahoo.com/group/SalinePittsfieldfreecycle/

It is much smaller than AA (or even Ypsi's) but this can work to your advantage if you want to get something - although there is less stuff posted, you have a much greater chance of not losing it to someone else if you don't check your computer ten times a day. I've gotten rid of all kinds of stuff within a few days, it is very satisfying.

Sandy: Oh, cool, I didn't know about the Saline one. Yes, it is very satisfying, isn't it? On either end of the freecycling transaction. I pick up my mooi brass lamp this evening!

There's also an Ann Arbor Garage Sale list: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/annarborgaragesale/

I luuuuuuuv freecycling. In fact, I'm about to freecycle AGAIN, right now. Just TRY to stop me! I'm looking for parts to my Alladin lamp.

It's a no-lose deal. The giver gets more space and the warm fuzzies. The getter gets a free present! All the energy and transportation costs that go into creating even one new product are completely sidestepped. Money and time is saved. I too love freecycling. Still working on my Mystery Box.
