DIY Studded Winter-Bike Tires

A KIND READER and friend sends a link to instructions on how to resourcefully create your own metal-studded winter-bike tires for that post-apocalyptic Mad-Max-on-a-bike testosterone-laden spiky-bike look. All you need is a power drill, a handful of screws, and some "duck tape" (also useful for taping down wandering ducks). Bonus: the link introduced Y. to the site "Car-Free Ann Arbor." Y. is car-free. We need a "Car-Free Ypsilanti" website where the car-free can share tips and tricks for maneuvering through life on our bagel-powered vehicles.

It may seem strange to kind readers, but Y. has not driven a motor vehicle for years now.

I'm lucky in that I work in AA, so it's possible for me to cobble together bike-bus options to get there, options unavailable to those whose job is further afield.

Y. enjoys trading a lunch with one of her car-people in exchange for a mulch run to Meijer's. I get to hang out with that person and have a sociable time instead of driving alone to some store to get something.

It also lets Y. be out in nature year-round, which I enjoy. Even in the depths of a bitterly cold day, Y. gets to admire the sparkly colors on the snow, test her wits against the sidewalk-ice, and breathe fresh air.

It's inconvenient, too. I can't buy what I want at the exact moment I want it. But that's OK. It pares down purchases to only those items I genuinely need. The whole picture changes when the reality is, "Am I willing to tote this home in zero degree-temperatures on a bike?"

Overall Y. is glad to be car-free. It fosters local purchasing, gives me daily exercise, and provides a bottomless source of shiny self-congratulation and self-righteousness. And maybe encourages, in a tiny way, other folks to take the plunge.

Laura, I'm now writing for a site called AutoblogGreen. It is a car blog that focuses on car issues relating alternative fuels, the environment, and alternative transportation. I just wrote a post on there about studded bike tires and linked back to you. It should be showing up on there sometime today, so you may see a spike in traffic later.

Sam: Cool. Thank you. And thanks to my kind friend who forwarded me this info.

Those little things on the ends of your legs are ... feet ... I believe. Walk around town. Plan your day and take thee extra 10-15-20 minutes to go from Michigan to Depot Town or Campus. Or bike.

For inclement weather, dress for it.

For seniors and those trips where you have to lug groceries or other stuff around, Ypsi needs an entrepreneur (or to pressure AATA) to start a city- wide accessible minibus circuit ... a feeder system to the downtown depot, as it were ... using energy-efficient vans.

Y.,

here is a thought. I've been car-free since December 2000. Now, after a lovely two years in Germany, I find myself at a new academic job, in Columbia, SC, where I don't know anyone, and where building up a new car-people network seems an arduous task.

So far, I've got what I need: a new used bike (I didn't ship my old one from Germany because it was too much), an apartment in an old house which is about five minutes walk from work, and a farmer's market once a week which is walking / biking distance.

Nevertheless, this town just doesn't cut it, the way it's built, for car-free types. The bus system is bad, it's going to be cut by 85% in January, it appears, and there are many places I feel I need ("need" in a qualified sense: like the German food store) that are really only do-able with a car.

So, I get a call from an old friend who lives in Knoxville now, she has just bought a new used car, and has her old used car, a 1990 Toyota, which she is proposing to "give me" for about $200.

My thought is: buy the car, stash it in the garage that came with the apartment, continue to walk to work and bike to the nearby things. Use the car only when needed -- I estimate twice or perhaps three times a week.

I'm not looking for your blessing, but it does seem that this is a middle ground I can live with, and I am curious to hear what you'll have to say.

I must be a bad person. You would sooner see me drive a city bus, inhabited by only me, than you would see me bike to work in nice clothes in the sticky, undulating heat of summer in South Carolina...

Posted by: Anna at 22 september 2006 23:04

E. G. Penet: Good advice. I know several people who make a point of walking as their primary mode of around-town locomotion.

As for me, I never walk anywhere. I'm too impatient. I want to get there FAST, on my big black 'bent, zooming around town. I went food shopping on it today at the Michigan Ave. Krogers and toted home a week's worth of chicken, honey, lettuce, and other stuff in no time.

Walking is so alien to me that the other day when the AF and I walked to the bus stop I remarked how odd it was to me to actually walk on a sidewalk, instead of biking over it. The AF justifiably called me a weirdo.

I love hiking in nature areas. There it's OK to move so slow because there's so much to see. Other than that, it's biking for me.

Daniel: I think your plan is reasonable. Car-free-ness is only an option for those in urban areas who can get around via bus or light rail. For many, it's simply not an option, and I think your plan is practical and admirable.

I think you'll eventually find your network of car-people, though.

Thank you for reading my humble blog from so far afield.

Posted by: Laura at 23 september 2006 00:33

Anna: That's a valid point. When I bike to AA in the summer....eeeuw, I'm a sweaty mess by the time I get to work.

My solution? Baby wipes, the biker's best friend. A quick change of shirts in the bathroom, accompanied by a quick wipedown with a baby wipe, and I'm passably fresh. Or so I hope.

Posted by: Laura at 23 september 2006 00:35

As for summer, it's wearing a backpack that makes you sweaty. Get a good rear basket for your bike and you'll arrive much drier.

Posted by: Ted at 23 september 2006 11:20

Ted: You are exactly right. When I wear my bike-bag in the summer I get a big swampy patch of ugh on my back. Better to toss it in the 'bent's rear basket. And I should get some panniers for the Eggplant.

Posted by: Laura at 23 september 2006 17:28

Too true, Ted, too true: a good rear basket (preferably one which detaches easily for shopping trips) is essential.

I don't have that far to bike to work, though: actually, I can walk to my office in about five minuntes. The bike I would continue to use for places which can be reached (by bike) in about 30 minutes or less, when I had the time.

But let's face it, this town is just not bike-friendly -- although you are allowed to put your bike on the front of the bus, even if everyone looks at you like you're crazy when you do so.

Posted by: Daniel at 25 september 2006 18:22

Hm. They don't look at me for that reason, but my dorky silver helmet gets a snigger now and then, justifiably. Luckily I'm too old to care.

As housekeeper of carfree ann arbor, I should apologize for the unintended exclusion of Ypsi in our title. The intention was to cover the local area, including Ypsi, Dexter, and anywhere within a bus or bike ride of Ann Arbor.

In general, the tips on the website apply to almost any town with carfree folks. Though we do make specific reference to AATA and other local resources and issue, most of them also apply to Ypsi. Hopefully it will stay that way (especially in reference to AATA).

In reference to Daniel's question about tapping into the local carfree community, carfree ann arbor was started specifically because we discovered that there are lots of people living carfree or carlite in the area, but they didn't seem to be very aware of one another. We're hoping that the blog will be a way not only to offer ideas on carfree living, but also to introduce a sense of community around living carfree.

We certainly wish that we were getting more comments like the ones on this thread. Baby wipes are a great idea! Mind if we steal it (with reference, of course)? We'll probably do something on backpacks and back sweat eventually, though the focus is on managing cold and wet right now. If anyone here has an idea or announcement that they'd like posted, we'd be happy to oblige.

Oh, and "duck tape" is not a misnomer. Duck and duct refer to the same tape. My brother works for Henkel Consumer Adhesives, so I feel obligated to use his terminology.
