A biker trying to cross five lanes of traffic on Michigan Ave. last night was struck and killed by a van near Wiard Rd., just east of Willow Run High School. Story.

I am very sorry to hear this sad news.
As for me, there are major roads I'll bike in Ypsi (Packard, most of Huron/Huron River Drive, Ellsworth) and roads I absolutely would not (Michigan Ave, Whittaker Rd.) I've got a giant flag on a very visible and large semi-recumbent, a forward white light, and a rear red blinkie. Can't take a thing for granted in the street.

Michigan Ave, especially out in the township near where this accident happened, seems to be a terrible place for anyone on foot or on bike. There are no sidewalks and few intersections with lights for crossing.

I'm with you Laura. There are roads I will not ride on, although for some roads it depends on the time of day. I have no problem on Plymouth between US-23 and downtown AA early in the morning before the rush, but I won't ride it during the morning and evening rushes. I'll ride parallel routes instead.

Hm. I'm surprised to hear that about Plymouth. I wouldn't have thought it was possible at all.

By early morning, I mean 5:30am, when I am riding to the, er, gym.

5:30! Mercy sakes. I congratulated myself for prying myself out of bed at 7 this a.m.
riding to a gym is a completely different matter from swirling around and around in the parking lot in a car, searching for the "perfect" spot.
