The Bomber

YPSIDIXIT and her adventurous friend ate breakfast at the Bomber today. First time for me, though I've lived here since 2000. The place is atmospheric, with about 25 model planes hung from the ceiling and the walls covered in framed photos, hung-up uniforms, and framed newspaper clippings from WW II, Korea, and the Vietnam War.

Y. loves the idea of gravy for breakfast, and her Sunrise Biscuit, a butterflied biscuit layered with sausage patties and eggs and with a side of crispy hash browns, came generously smothered in it. It was perfectly cooked and good the way that only food made wholly on the premises, and not trucked in from Nebraska in a bag, can be. The waitress confirmed that the golden, almost fluffy hash browns were made from scratch from potatoes in the back, as was the rich, spicy gravy. The adventurous friend's salad-plate-size pancakes, 3/4 inches thick, were studded with juicy blueberries. The adventurous friend asserted, "I always judge a restaurant by the quality of its pancakes" and pronounced the Bombers' first-rate.

Y. plans to burn up the million calories ingested at the Bomber in the titanic project of destroying hte carpet in her long-neglected office today.

Y. could not finish the giant pool of food on her plate and later, Clover gave the food an enthusiastic two dewclaws up.

I wondered if that was you! I think my missus and I sat a table over from you, but as we've never actually met, and I'd only so far put together the "human face of Ypsidixit" from a couple of of blurry photos and brief sightings, I wasn't sure. Next time I'll be sure to say hi... :)

An aside but perhaps of interest to your readers, we spent most of our wonderful breakfast (wife: said pancakes; me: Greek omelette and those awesome hashbrowns) discussing our morning of woeful luck with our car (long story short - it broke down). On the recommendation of a trusted acquaintance we took it on spec to local mechanic Chris Hahn on Lincoln Street (just a block from our house), who not only fixed our transmission problem within a few hours, but did so on a Saturday morning on a holiday weekend, and at a reasonable price too. Assuming the engine doesn't fall out of our car in the next few days, take this as another Gold Star Recommendation for an independent Ypsilanti small business...

Ditto for Hahn's. As for Bomber, when we're smart, we don't order two separate meals- we find that the nature-lover's pancakes are plenty (and then some!) for two.

Rolling out of the Bomber at least once should be required for Ypsi citizenship. Vomiting after one order of "Silver Dollar" pancakes should revoke citizenship.

I find the Bomber's food to be alright, but think the portions are almost embarassingly "American-sized."

The decor was a little half-baked. The interior looks like your average local greasy spoon, except that a teenaged boy apparently snuck into it one night and hung up his model plane collection. They could do more with it, I think.

The Service was acceptable, but not great. When I go to a place like this, I expect the waitress to call everyone in my party "Sugar" or "Honey" at least once, and this didn't happen.

My primary objection was the clientle. Out of the 80 or so people packing the place that morning, there wasn't one black person, and based upon how many patrons felt the need to stare at my hair through the course of our meal, I'd guess most of them don't get exposed to much diversity. I honestly got the feeling that the small distance between Bomber's and downtown has some invisible boundary, as there wasn't anything approaching the demographic mix commonly seen in Abe's, Wolverine, or any of the downtown bars.

I really hope that everyone with a blog in Ypsilanti leaves a review here. I know Mark Maynard has something about moldy bread he could be adding.

Matt: how funny! Gracious, Ypsi is a mighty small world. I see someone I know almost every time I go somewhere.

Thank you for the good auto repair recommendation. I've had good luck with Conley's, as well, just off Huron near the Towner House, more or less.

Yep, those hash browns are a wonder, aren't they?

My vote for worst hash browns in the bi-city area: the Fleetwood. Now, I love the atmosphere and the clientele and most of the food, but the oily, undercooked hash browns leave much to be desired. At any rate.

Suzie: I saw the nature lover's pancakes on the menu and was urging the adventurous friend, a nature lover, to get them ("comes with a side of bark.") The waitress cautioned him that it's a giant amount of food, and he went instead for a smaller pancake order. And still couldn't finish them.

Posted by: Laura at 02 juli 2006 11:53

Brett*: We had a different experience. There was a mixed clientele when we were there, though, granted, most of the customers were white.

If you want "Honey," merely go to Abe's, as you know.

The model airplanes unfortunately draw attention to the horribly stained ceiling tiles, which should be replaced pronto.

But due to the food, I'll be back, for sure.

You can request a half order of the Nature Lovers Pancakes (2 huge pancakes instead or 3). They are the best. My daughter has produced a good copy of their recipe at home with our much healthier and tastier pancake recipe, with wheat germ and oat bran additions. But at the Bomber, you share a little of your breakfast companion's sausage gravy, a savory southern delicacy. And it is an interesting mix patrons (too many smokers, my pet peave) and sometimes you share a long table with strangers (oh my!).

The bomber food is plentiful and good, in moderation. But I go for the airplanes and military stuff on the walls. Lots of good Ypsi and American history. Great for people watching too.

Posted by: Jimmy-M at 02 juli 2006 18:42

It *was* good people-watching. And I also enjoyed the wall decor.

We routinely take nationally-touring bands to the Bomber. Many have the requisite odd look and vegan leanings of aspiring rock stars, but they always love the place - service, decor, and food.

Usually, we see an "OK" ethnic mix. It's not like anyone's taking stats or checking bloodlines at the door. The bands usually have a wide ethnic mix and felt very comfortable.

My test-pilot grandpa just looked up at the models and grinned, while his silver-dollar pancakes cooled.

Posted by: leighton Mann at 02 juli 2006 23:31

Leighton: That's cool about your grandpa. I have to take my WW II-veteran dad there sometime just for fun. (Plus I want to pig out again, preferably on something swimming in that country gravy).

I note that a bunch of kind readers have lauded the Nature Lover's Pancakes. That seems to be a hit menu item.

I think the cooks at the Bomber do a terrific job. One of them won a national poetry award not too long ago.

I generally spend my time at the Bomber negotiating between understanding Ypsilanti's important role in vanquishing the evil Hitler and my knowledge that my parents, as children, were bombed by some of the very planes on display.

Posted by: Ingrid at 03 juli 2006 03:34

Ingrid: That is a thought-proking comment.

One of my parents, in Holland, was liberated due in part to the planes on display. Though it was the Canadians who got there first, in her case. And left a frying pan that the family used for years after the war.

The Germans took over my Opa's car repair shop as a commando center. They installed an intercom system that the family had fun using after the war. After losing everything and seeing all their possessions thrown onto the street. My mom recalls seeing other girls in town wearing her clothes that the Germans had tossed out.

They got word 24 hours in advance that the Germans were coming for the car repair shop. Via the underground. When the Germans came, the place was deserted.

Not so long ago.

The Bomber is great and I've seen everyone in Ypsi, from the mayor on down, there at one time of another. Try the bacon, which is the best around. Their omelettes are fantastic, too.

I've also seen, or been with, a lot of people of different races in there, so I don't think the "mixture" thing is an issue.

Posted by: Kate at 03 juli 2006 12:45

I don't, either.

Mmm, bacon. OK, that's on my list for next time, which I hope is soon.

Though I'll forgo the "Bomber Breakfast," with its pound (?) of bacon.
