Steve Pierce Endorsed by Three Local Unions

A press release your humble scribe just received:

"The Steve Pierce for Mayor Campaign is pleased to announce that Steve Pierce has been endorsed by the three major employee unions at the City of Ypsilanti: Police, Fire, and Public Works and Staff. The unions to endorse Steve are:

Ypsilanti Police Officers Association
Ypsilanti City Firefighters Local 401
American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) Local 623

Steve Pierce is grateful for the trust and support from the unions and their members. “Like many in the union and throughout the community, I am opposed to the City Income Tax,” said Steve Pierce. “Ypsilanti’s success depends on bringing new jobs and residents to Ypsilanti and the City Income Tax will discourage new investment in our community.”

Steve Pierce went on to say, “This campaign is about jobs and providing core services that enhance our quality of life. The city has fire trucks that spend more time in the shop than on the road. We need to invest in the men and women who protect and serve our community instead of pouring more taxpayer money into risky and speculative land projects.”

These endorsements are added to a growing list of Unions and Union members that are supporting Steve Pierce to be the next Mayor of Ypsilanti, which includes the Washtenaw County Skilled Building Trades Council.

The Steve Pierce Campaign says they will be announcing several other Union endorsements in the next two weeks."

Apparently the folks that work here know a good candidate when they see one. I've spoken to local business owners who agree as well. My own union man is for him too!

This must be illegal.

In clear violation of "Campaign Something-or-Other."

I have no evidence supporting this claim, nor can I provide any, but if you tell me I'm wrong I'll hold my breath until you agree with me.

You're wrong, Brett. Let me know when you turn blue.

Sarcasm, Kate. It's what's for dinner.

Unusual, tho, to declare for one candidate without actually meeting with all of them.

Oops, did I open another Pandora's Box? Sorry Brett, I do believe in free speech as I have said before. I abhor the conversation police and feel free to discuss most anything (with some discretion I hope).
And for the record my Union man and I do support equal rights for all. In fact a few years back, my proud hard working husband was caught (along with another neighbor) chasing a couple Monahan’s petitioners out of town. Some people know what they like and want.

I believe (but could be wrong) that Lisa's referring to the Unions meeting with candidates.

From the text of the endorsement, it sounds as if the main deciding factor for them was the city income tax.

Brett: Yep, you're right. I'm sorry, Lisa--I completely misread your comment (and have removed my own dumb response because now it sounds foolish). Carry on.

Pierce has probably indicated to the unions that he would stave off any reductions affecting them as well. It would be curious as to whether he can accomplish that should his support of KYR result in the set aside of $240K in 07/08.

John: Now, I find that a bit thick.

It was this city council, of whom you are a member, who created the bus problem by eliminating the subsidy.

Now you dump the problem you created on someone else's doormat?

That's hardly fair or decent.

Posted by: Laura at 11 juli 2006 16:56

Now we have an acting City Councilman attributing statements to a candidate without basis other than abject conjecture.

Is this what our city governmental officials stand for in a time of challenge? Baseless attacks designed to get their hand-picked candidate elected?

If ever I saw an argument to reject the status quo, I'm seeing it now.

Actually, John, the unions that met with him all favor a change in the status quo. That's why they endorsed him. He reaches out, he builds consensus, and he gets things done.
