ONE OF YPSIDIXIT'S SPIES, on the early-morning EMU beat, reports that at 4:30 a.m. this morning the "coney joint" on Cross was "hoppin'". Ypsidixit loves coneys and wonders if it's worth a visit one of these days, or if it's more of a greasy student dive.

Which reminds me... I need to write up my rant on Coney Island (Brooklyn) hot dogs vs. Coney Island (Detroit) hotdogs....

The Coney joint is broken.

I adore Detroit-style coneys. Love the little yellow coney shack on Michigan Ave. May I ask, out of ignorance, how are Brooklyn coneys different, Scott?

Jerry: it's broken? A place to avoid, you say?

Unless something's changed recently..... The Food Network did a show about Detroit Coney dogs, and how New Yorkers had never heard of them, or at least called them something else... "Coneys" are a term that was or at least used to be unique to the metro Detroit area. The perplexed looks on New York area residents were a hoot when the host of the show explained Detroit's 'Coney dogs' to them.

I'm told that in some parts of Canada (maybe it was Quebec?), you can get a hot dog with marinara-type sauce on top, called a "Michigan dog". Sounds kinda gross.

First thing my son does when he comes home on leave is stop on the way home from the airport and get a Leo's coney dog (or two) and fries.

I like it, mostly for breakfast and their salads. It's local. I like the owners. And it's cheap.
Students sometimes swarm there on bar nights. But on off hours in the summer, I've never felt out of place. I definitely put it in the not-broken category.

Fritz! I met you outside the coney joint today! You were perspicacious in guessing that the svelte biker type with the extremely handsome companion was in fact none other than Ypsidixit! It was nice to talk to you. Thank you for saying hello! Ypsi is a small world, to be sure. Anyways, nice to meet you!

Have you tried Stony Creek Coney Island in the Paint Crrek shopping center on Huron at Whittaker? FABULOUS! The Athena salad is a real treat.
