Insightful Report on Wednesday's CHENA Mayoral Interviews
A KIND READER sends a link to local blogger Loose Tea's excellent report on Wednesday's mayoral interviews at the College Heights East Neighborhood Association meeting. Loose Tea analyzes Steve Pierce ("the progressive voice for change"), Lois Richardson ("the visionary optimist", and Paul Schreiber ("the defender of the status quo").

My vote is for Lois Richardson. I believe she would be the best canidate for the job. Considering her experience as a council women and having lived in Ypsilanti. I belive she has the heartbeat of Ypsi. Her willingness to go to the waters project site and put a sign there to inform passerbyers about the project shows she is not afraid to roll up her sleeves to do what it takes to make Ypsilanti a thriving city once again. I believe she can help bring commerce back to Ypsilanti and help legislate to once and for all get rid of that eyesore on Washington Ave known as Deja Vu. I believe if we get rid of that establishment along with the bookstore on E Cross and have a tighter grip on controling the drug and prostituion problem in Ypsi, then we can bring commerce back to to downtown Ypsi. Hopefully with the opening of Mongolian Barbecue in September, we will see many of those empty storefronts have thriving businesess once again. I believe that Lois Richardson is the women for the job to do that and she has my vote!

Just in my personal opinion, I have no problem with either the Deja Vu or the bookstore. Both are legitimate businesses and infinitely preferable to empty storefronts.
Posted by: Laura at 14 juli 2006 12:56
If if ain't broke, don't fix it.
Posted by: Status Quo at 14 juli 2006 13:52
Problem is, both clubs like DV and off-color shops create empty store fronts. Other businesses don't want to be next to them and some folks avoid areas that have them. Right or wrong, it's just one of those development facts. (Think of all the thriving downtowns you've been to, how many had stores selling adult materials?)

Can't turn straw into gold. But you can make people believe you can.
All the world's a stage and every town a player in their part.
Maybe it's pretty close to perfect already.
Posted by: Anonymous at 14 juli 2006 14:40
While I dont particularly mind either Deja Vu or the store, I have long thought that it would be really cool to get rid of Deja Vu and open up something like The Alamo Drafthouse like they have in Austin. But mostly that is because I would rather have a beer and watch movies than have a beer and watch ladies dance around a pole. Just a personal preference really. :)

Lynne: Just to let you know, I edited your comment by removing 2 words, just out of curiosity to see what affects the items in the top right-hand corner. I don't mean to annoy you--it's just out of curiosity more than anything else.

I have to wonder Status Quo, what in our fair city is not broken?
Posted by: maryd at 14 juli 2006 15:07
The community spirit and love for Ypsilanti.

Posted by: Laura at 14 juli 2006 15:24
OK, I give, you are all right on your many points. We do have a lovely river running through it, and it cannot be sold off or repossessed. And we do a working clock in Depot Town and I do agree we do have "The community spirit and love for Ypsilanti." I guess there are some things about the status quo I would not have changed, except for some of the political landscape. I think new thinking will only enhance what we have going.
Posted by: maryd at 14 juli 2006 15:26
Mary: I agree completely.

Venus and Pluto are on opposite sides an argument now. The question is what to do when our heart tugs against what we feel is our larger purpose. When something about a relationship just doesn't feel right, it's a "heads up" from the universe -- hold on tight, a twist of fate is coming. Lead with honesty and a sense of adventure.
ARIES (March 21-April 19). You're lucky because you take a moment to acknowledge and appreciate the humanity you share with others. This is done subtly -- maybe simply through a glance or nod -- but the impact is strong.
TAURUS (April 20-May 20). Waiting, though it may feel intolerable, is advised. The stars suggest you need time to process your feelings. You find good fortune when you act instead of REact.
GEMINI (May 21-June 21). It may seem daring to imagine that things are perfect as they are, but it also may very well be true. Let go of your minor concerns, and you're able to face (indeed, embrace) your current situation.
CANCER (June 22-July 22). Love is a push-and-pull game; you'll feel better if you push less and let a sweetheart come to you. By making your own happiness a higher priority, you handle problems.
LEO (July 23-Aug. 22). It's lucky to alter your plans, especially if you do so because you have a funny feeling. Others benefit from your decisions. Caregivers, note: Children thrive with more to do and be accountable for.
VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22). You outsmart the foxes today! Change your customary responses, especially in regard to loved ones who repeat like a scratched CD. The surprise interruption in your usual communication flow brings about a brilliant result.
LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23). Cherished dreams of the distant past resurface. How did you forget? Now that you're back "in touch," you're also very attractive to anyone who can help you move forward in the direction of making those dreams real.
SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 21). Just being around a certain charismatic person makes you feel more engaged in your surroundings. You might be flattered to know that others feel the same way about you -- specifically, a Leo.
SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21). Loved ones need to shine, and you let them. Your graciousness will be long-remembered. Note: This is not a good day to use your cell phone while driving -- in fact, maybe it's never a good day for that.
CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19). The stars favor investigations of all kinds. Delve into topics of interest, including casual ones like news and gossip. What you learn makes you even more curious.
AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18). Being too logical stunts your growth. Go on a flight of fancy. A break in your routine leads you to an influential person. A Libra offers advice. Even though it's hard to hear, this is the best perspective on your situation.
PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20). You give others the benefit of the doubt -- it's your modus operandi. Today, this could be a misstep. The most likely scenario turns out to be true. You don't have to be jaded to make an informed decision.
WEEKEND LOVE FORECAST: ARIES: You win a heart by talking in "You" phrases. Try not to use "I" very much. TAURUS: Venus graces you with natural appeal, so learning about love through manuals and classes, etc. may feel forced, but there are benefits to doing so. GEMINI: To avoid repeating past mistakes, do something different when you feel deja vu. CANCER: Joining a society, club or class will put you in the middle of a new circle of eligibles. LEO: Skip formalities and get right to the point. VIRGO: Seize every chance to meet and cultivate rapport with those you admire. LIBRA: You make a person feel like a real Somebody around you, so this person wants to be around you all the time. SCORPIO: You meet love while satisfying your curiosity. SAGITTARIUS: You're getting in the mix in a bold new way. CAPRICORN: Don't worry about meeting your special someone -- focus on being a special someone. AQUARIUS: You're drawn to a totally different type of person, or aspect of a person, than usually would interest you. PISCES: Your attraction secret is to celebrate what's right about the other person, instead of trying to figure out what is wrong.

Maryd, I agree that new thinking is good, but only if it is followed by positive action. All talk and no action doesn't do anything.
Posted by: Kate at 15 juli 2006 22:08
Kate, you speak to the critical difference between looking good and being good. Great leaders of our past are remembered for their words only because of their extraordinary efforts and accomplishments. At some point anything new is a leap of faith.

Okay, I know I'm coming into this discussion late (I promise to keep more up-to-date on your blogs, YD), but I like DejaVu, or more appropriately, The Love Boutique. I shop there at least four to six times a year. There is a wonderful man who works there named John. He's a great salesman, and honest about all the products. I love to just go and talk to him from time to time, he's really quite interesting.
So where is Mongolian BBQ going in at?
