Friday Open Mike

BOY, a lot's been going on lately. Mayoral debates. Attentive exploration of Parker Mill Park and its boardwalks winding through sylvan beauty with the adventurous friend. New wifi in Cafe Luwak. New freezer in the Double Eagle Coney Island. OK, that last one isn't earth-shaking (though it was table-shaking!) So what's on your mind?

As mentioned in the comments section of another post, I did some thinking on putting together a comprehensive calendar of Ypsi happenings. The current status of said calendar is actually 8 different calendars (festivals, live music, theater, etc.) that I'd eventually like to integrate into one, color coded monstrosity with the ability to hide the categories not suited to your interest (i.e. not everyone cares about bar specials). But, before I rattle on about it anymore, feel free to take a look... it's the top post here - www.kewitude.com Any suggestion or additional events you know of would be super awesome.

You could add Growing Hope events from www.growinghope.net... oops, if they are not already on there. I haven't looked yet.

Katy: Nice calendar! Thank you!

Lisa: Hm, didn't see the GH events; that would be a good addition.

I'm itching to start a discussion group, topic: Sustainability in Post-Apocalypic Ypsilanti. In these Post-Peak days, how are we preparing for a MUCH more local future? I have some ideas.

Also looking for a new job. I've got my fingers crossed for a really exceptional one but I can't tell, don't wanna jinx it. But if that doesn't work out, anyone else know of any openings for a cool activist, writer, singer & medicinal gardener such as myself?

Posted by: Lisa Marshall Bashert at 28 juli 2006 13:11

Lisa, G.M. powertrain is hiring temps starting at $21.00 per/hour. Hot, dirty, mundane repetative work awaits those who got referals from employees. A few quick bucks, but little else!

Sustainability in Post-Apocalypic Ypsilanti.

I'll totally join that group! Weirdly enough, I'm currently reading a terrific post-apocalyptic novel: Earth Abides. It's fantastic. Really absorbing. I often have fantasies--well, thoughts, anyways, about what a post-apocalyptic world would be like. An endlessly interesting thought experiment.

Fabulous idea, Lisa! Sign me up!

Lisa, I don't know if this is what you're looking for, but there are currently 6 job postings in the Ann Arbor People's Food Co-op for six different co-op jobs (kitchen supervisor, cook, &c.)! They are on big fliers on the bulletin board just to the right of the door (at least AA has a living wage ordinance!)

Posted by: Laura at 28 juli 2006 13:18

Thanks for the tip Lisa! I just added Growing Hope events.

Posted by: Katy at 28 juli 2006 13:23

OK, Laura, let's start our group. LOL, I'm reading "Dies the Fire," probably the same plot...even looks like the same cover...

Posted by: Lisa Marshall Bashert at 28 juli 2006 13:57

Of course, perhaps a slightly different name would be preferable, since the acronym would turn out to be ...um...SPAY.

Posted by: Lisa Marshall Bashert at 28 juli 2006 14:00

Hm. Or SIPAY, which is kind of a lame acronym. Reminds me of a sippy cup, which would certainly not be a prominent feature of a post-apocalyptic Ypsi. Babies would have to learn to drink from the Huron or die.

I do realize it's not still Friday, but this statement in today's paper really struck me: "The poor man who is currently our president has reached such a point of befuddlement that he thinks stem cell research is the same as taking human lives, but that 40,000 dead Iraqi citizens are progress toward Democracy." - Molly Ivins

Posted by: addiann at 29 juli 2006 11:51

I agree with that statement, 'least all but the "poor man" part. I've no sympathy for him at all . . .

Posted by: trustygetto at 29 juli 2006 13:00

Neither do I, but it seems (or at least I'd like to see it thusly) that she might be doing a bit of eye-rolling accompanying that endearment. It could be she's softening the blow for a fellow Texan, and I'll give her that. She does have a fine way of describing what an idiot he is.

Posted by: addiann at 29 juli 2006 13:18

Addiann: Friday open mike can go on all weekend and into next week if kind readers like.

That's a pungent quote; thank you for sharing it.

FYI, I just discovered that this blog's new font size is too small for the Mich. Av. library's monitors. (And these machines are too locked-down for me to override it.)

Posted by: Fritz at 31 juli 2006 18:50

Fritz: Phooey. I'm sorry about that. I keep it small because i crowd a lot of stuff on the front page and post often. Do you know, perhaps, the minimum font size for the computers to be able to read it?

Posted by: Laura at 31 juli 2006 19:59

Do you know, perhaps, the minimum font size for the computers to be able to read it?

Off hand, no. But I'm there often and can run a few tests to find out.

Posted by: Fritz at 01 augustus 2006 22:13

My mistake. I tried the same machine again today and it worked. After playing with it some more, I think someone had left IE's "Text Size" setting one step below neutral, it did not reset on logout/login, and I obviously guessed wrong about where IE puts that control. Sorry for the false alarm.

I haven't gotten anything done today. I feel like a fog, but what can I say? I've just been letting everything wash over me lately, not that it matters. Shrug.
