Ann Arbor Invades Moss Island

Ann Arbor is planning new canoe trips from Gallup to Peninsular Park. This means that hordes of Ann Arborites--bless 'em--will be cruising the fertile carp fields around my beloved Moss Island and coating the surface of one particular stretch of river between Dixboro Dam and Superior Pond that is currently owned by Y. and two of her friends. More or less. The quiet of Lily Pad Inlet? Gone. The peaceful hum of the sewer plant? Shattered by cell phone conversations. The mossiness of my Moss Island? Ripped into shreds by curious moss-gatherers. Floaters! What can be done? Possible solutions range from a series of underwater mines just east of Dixboro Dam to a fake barrier rope blocking the river festooned with signs warning about Wendigo sightings. Help!

Fear not. They pick up at 5pm. And it starts at 1pm or 2pm. If they dawdle at all they will miss their ride. They estimate the trip at 2 1/2 hours. Thats if you paddle consistently.

Ah, Well, that's some relief. I'll just have to hide the boat in my special hidey-hole under the grapevine between 1 and 5, quietly reading my Faulkner for the billionth time.

Last time I hid there Mr. New England Pie did not see me--but Mr. Fringy Buckskin did (even thought I was fully hunkered).

2 and 1/2 hours seems purty slow to me though.

Incidentally I checked the river while biking to work. Much slower than the raging torrent it was a couple weeks ago and almost glassy, and calm. Looks like good floatin' this weekend.

Laura, you're just worried that the airship business has some aquatic competition.

Dangit, I am. The newspaper story made some silly joke about commuting not being feasible but, Jiminy, you hook up a motor with a skiff and you'd have a fine and dandy water taxi for Ypsi-ites going to Ann Arbor. Yes, sir, all aboard the 8 a.m. launch to Ann Arbor! Some enterprising soul could clean up, here. I'd take the taxi. Nothing I'd rather do than lounge in a skiff and examine the trees while headed for work. Entrepreneurs! Fill the void, here!

"Paddlers don't have to opt any longer for the long slog through Barton Pond - exhausting on a windy day"

heh, as someone who regularly fishes that stretch, there are two slogs that will kick your ass on a windy day. Barton is the worst, though.

I love the fact that the fishing is outstanding and you never see another soul on the river, save for the occasional lauralei sighting when she lets her guard and camoflage down.

I predict the two slogs, the precarious portage (no hyperbole) at Superior dam and the shallow, boat-scraping river below Peninsular Paper will keep that stretch of river relatively yahoo free. Except for me and my two cronies, that is.

Then, there is the matter of someone dying at the Peninsular dam approximately every eight years...

My money is on Superior Dam.
