Ikea Campout Time!
YPSIDIXIT has no life, responsibilities, interests, friends, or ongoing projects. She usually just goes home and stares at the walls.
So when she learned that the new Canton Ikea will allow people to camp out up to two days before the grand opening, Y. was overjoyed. Ypsidixit is so spiritually bankrupt that the only source of meaning and grace in her life is buying products. And it's really, really important to me that I beat my neighbors in going there first, so that I can boast of the accomplishment of visiting a store.
So you can imagine my excitement.

I mean, REALLY. Can you imagine such foolishness? And who in Heaven's sake has the TIME to do this? And I loved the part about fighting over the "prizes."
The great philosophers would be proud to see such behavior.
Lord help us.

Also, I hate it when news stories call human beings "consumers." Like that is THE identifying characteristic of creatures full of dreams, hopes, thoughts, meditations, reflections, love, and poetry.
"Consumers." Feh. Makes me want to stay home for the entire weekend and read books and write letters on actual pieces of paper to my friends and look at leaves and clouds and not spend so much as one thin dime on anything.

Not that many years ago, people would say they were "born to shop". I think these peole need to take a long walk in the park, smell some flowers and watch the waters of a river flow past. Then maybe, just maybe, they will begin to understand what life is about. I fear, I am sorry to say, I may be too hopeful. The value they place on objects is perhaps too high, so they miss the worth of life.

You nail it, Listener.
Speaking as someone who loves nothing better than to laze for an entire summer day floatin' on the river around Moss Island, perfectly blissfully.

It's a #@$%&* FURNITURE store!

Doug! It's so much more. It's been called a "cult."
Can I set up a lawn chair for you, for our two-day wait?

hmmm. I have heard about that Ikea store opening up and I have to admit that I will most likely shop there some time this summer since I need a bed and they have some cheap but nice beds. But I cant imagine being so excited about a store that I would want to camp out in front of one especially when there are so many other nicer places to go camping.
But, if that is what makes someone happy, more power to them. I hope they enjoy their urban camping.

The opening day is June 7, and folks are allowed to start lining up Monday, June 5.

Hmm, I think there's potential here.
Head down to the Ikea, hang out with the campers, spend time in a consumer-cult, talk about furniture and meatballs.
Then, just before the store opens, pack up and head away saying, "I have better things to do with my time than shop for furniture."

A warning to those about to shop IKEA: The furniture is certainly affordable, but inspect the quality carefully. I assembled some pieces for friends and the quality varied from passable to wretched embarrassment and planned obsolescence

LF, that jibes with what I've heard described as "a dresser that couldn't be moved across the room without falling apart."
Posted by: Laura at 19 mei 2006 17:02
Chuck: I'm afraid the campers would by opening-time be in such a fever pitch of excitement that a clever protest of that sort would be lost in the din of hysteria...
good idea, though.
...spend time in a consumer-cult

It's a #@$%&* FURNITURE store!
Not just your standard furniture store, Doug. Rather, it's a furniture store that sells fresh pancakes topped with mouth-watering lindenberry jam. You may call it consumerism; I, on the other hand, call it delicious!
Posted by: Margaret at 19 mei 2006 17:12
In all fairness, lindenberry jam is good.
That's as far as I'm going, though.

The placement of the arrow is right.

Hey, don't knock it. A recent Ypsi real estate ad on Craigslist touted the place as "15 minutes from the new Ikea." Let GM shrivel up and die! The future of our economy is secure.

Is it too late to put a big box store on Water Street? How did little Canton win this prize, when Ypsi has vacant lots from here to breakfast?

I personally don't get what the hubbub is about. I peeked in their furniture catalog, and...nothing special. It's OK-looking, but nothing that makes my hair stand on end.
Posted by: Laura at 22 mei 2006 13:38
(grudgingly) OK, I do like the sheepskin, which would look lovely on my new red floor.

I am self-employed. I work my own hours.
At the store they're opening in my area, they're giving away chairs for free to the first 100 people in line. The chairs sell for $80-$100. I like the chairs.
Why would I *not* camp out for 48 hours to get a free chair?
I don't understand why 10,000 people would show up on opening morning if they don't get something free, though.

Kat: Why would I *not* camp out for 48 hours to get a free chair?
Because you are a free person whose dignity can't be bought with corporate baubles?
