Ypsilanti: Home of the $99 Suit
A KIND LONGTIME READER WRITES:
"You know Cannon's clotheier on Hamilton just north of 94? Hamilton and
Pearl, across from Biggie's? There's a big yellow awning you might
recognize that advertises it as the "Home of the $99 Suit." I've been
meaning to go in there for years and finally did so because I had to
get a black suit for an upcoming wedding."
"Great place! Inventory was small but always rotating and the staff was
very friendly. Real mom n' pop type of place. They were having a little
fashion show at the time, which regrettably I could not stay for,
cooking hot dogs and listening to R&B. Two very helpful gentlemen found
me a pretty slick suit - regularly $160, they gave it to me for the
as-advertised ninety-nine dollars."
"So maybe you could let some of your readers know that if they need a
suit - or a hat, or some pretty slick shoes - they might head down
there."

Y. has seen the store many times. The prospect of a fashion show complete with hot dogs and music is completely charming and just the sort of oddball event I enjoy.
There are a lot of Ypsilanti success stories all over town, tucked here and there. Nice to be reminded of one.

I don't think it's Hamilton and *Pearl*, though...but anyways, yeah, just north of 94.

Local business comes
through in need
To the Editor:
In January of this year, my middle school age sons lost their father.
His unexpected death left our family with the dreaded task of planning a funeral and trying to console two young boys who had lost their dad.
I would like to thank the staff at Cannon’s Suit Warehouse for their kindness. Neither of my sons had appropriate attire to attend a funeral.
I called Cannon’s and explained the situation. The boys wanted to wear suits, but were concerned about breaking down crying while out shopping.
The staff at Cannon’s offered to close early to give my sons some privacy in picking out their suits. They let my sons pick out exactly what they wanted and then opened early the next day to do alterations.
The owner of Cannon’s told my sons that he would keep them in his prayers.
The compassion and personal service received at Cannon’s was a great comfort during a terrible time for my children.
Often times, we get into a habit of going to larger department stores and forget about our local businesses. Supporting local businesses is good for the community and the service and prices far better than those of large chains.
I would like to encourage Ypsilanti residents to shop at Cannon’s. They have quality merchandise and more importantly, they give personal service that only a local business can provide.

Holy moly, is that a great story.
So, yeah, y'all. Cannon's. Get attired. The point in the letter above about local business and attentive care was also well made.

Yeah--the sensitivity shown to the children is very touching. Thanks, kind longtime reader. :)

Wow - this is all excellent to hear, I've been thinking about guiding my non-ypsi-living beau over there, as he's been having a heck of a time finding a suit at the normal chains, but I'd never heard any reviews.

Sure sounds like the place to go to me.

Here's wishing Ypsi-Dixit a good night's sleep in preparation for tomorrow's Ypsi Council meeting.

Thank you, kind HD. I'm just finishing up my charts for tomorrow.

Katy, is your beau too tall? Getting a suit for $99 is nice when you have to spend additional money on tailoring.

I'm a big fan of the 99 cent suits at Value World, myself. I've scored a Jones New York and a couple of Yves St. Laurents, if that word takes the plural.

Value World! Yay! Y. buys all her clothes there, and no where else. Which is sometimes a bit apparent. But no matter! Like you, Michael, I've found extraordinary stuff there. The place is just around the corner from my house. Value World! Yay!

Charlie: when I first read this (in an email automatically sent to me), I swear I thought it was spam:
Katy, is your beau too tall?
(snort!)
Posted by: Laura at 04 april 2006 11:17
Haha!
Is your beau too tall? Does he snore? Have acne? Well we've got discount meds for you!
Seriously, on the suits side, Mike McC is right - score a good vintage suit from a second hand store and then have it tailored for a few extra bucks. I can't wear those sweet thin-lapeled boot cut 1960s mod suits anymore like I used to (nothing sadder than an aging hipster except maybe an aging hipster who was probably never that hip to begin with) but I admire them threads, man.
