THE CARP AT MOSS ISLAND are about to get a few new flavor crystals.

This makes me sad. The Michigan DEQ "hopes" that the plume will enter the Huron south of the city's water intake. Well, hoping doesn't hurt.

Carp will be here long after humans. Just like roaches. They are tough mo-fo's.

I admire that quality of theirs. They're actually not a native species, but so adaptable that they spread everywhere. I also recently learned that they can interbreed with commn goldfish...and are actually the same species!

The plume is old news...the whole mess started in 1985. But I was recently startled to learn that it is moving towards the river at more than a foot a day.

What has me stymied is why Pall has been able to absolve itself of any ongoing responsibility.

They leaked the gunk; they should bear the costs.

Yes, it's hardly an ambiguous case by any means. They made 1.6 billion last year if I remember correctly. And ironically one of their main products is water flters.

Dioxane, smoxane, I put that shit on my toast in the morning.

If you get out into the Riv enough this summer you will see some giant goldfish.

Giant goldfish?! I want to see the giant goldfish. May I ask, where do they hang out? I was checking my old raft last night--coupla small holes that I hope to patch.

I thought ALL goldfish got giant if they were in a big enough container (e.g., they scale up). I've always thought that was curious...and a little disturbing.

Anna: That is disturbing, isn't it? The guys I put in the pond each spring (about 10 times bigger than their winter indoor tank) get about 3 times as large. Haven't looked in there lately though. For all I know they're porpoise-sized and bulging out of the pond.

Bruce, the giant goldfish (scroll down for photo).

I've seen them all the way between Dixboro and Veesteeon.

Posted by: Anonymous at 21 juli 2005 15:47

Wow. I'll have to keep my eyes peeled. Thank you for the tip, A.

Posted by: Laura at 21 juli 2005 15:50

There seems to be a preponderance of them in Superior Pond and also by MC Donalds. Big Goldies seems to like the lake areas.

Posted by: Anonymous at 21 juli 2005 15:52

That is so interesting. I never knew they were there. I'm going to keep a sharp eye out. Wonder if they're koi..

Posted by: Laura at 21 juli 2005 15:58

Maybe they like french fries.

Posted by: Anna at 21 juli 2005 16:46

I bet they do.

However, I've been back behind that McDonald's fishing. Kinda not easy to get to & a train track between restaurant & river...I doubt they're eating fries someone's tossing in.
