Maiden Voyage of the Pequod

LOOK ALIVE, MATEYS! Ypsidixit took her new boat to the river for a deliriously happy and mesmerizing eight hours fooling around on the Huron.
Note: Many pictures inside; please give it a moment to load.

Ypsidixit carted her boat into the woods, unpacked it, and camouflaged the dolly under some boughs (having brought a pruner for that purpose). She inflated the boat and, (oh, joy!) cast off from Moss Island.
Am I really on the water?

Y. rowed upstream to an island within sight of a railroad bridge near Parker Mill Park. The river on the north side of the island was running fast, making a real challenge to rowing. Y. slipped over to the lee side and explored the southern side of this wild island. She moored in the shade and immediately got a case of the lazies. It was so comfy on the springy air-mattress-like boat, and so peaceful and green on the deserted river. Ypsidixit lolled here for a while before casting off to go explore Superior Pond.

Ypsidixit drifted past Moss Island and headed for Superior Pond. She realized that every foot she drifted downstream she'd have to make up for with rowing upstream, a sobering thought.
The drifting was mesmerizing and calm. Floating along at .5 miles an hour, with the scenery slowly changing and the damselflies and bugs on the water puts one in a state of no-thought.

Around the corner from Moss Island, two bridges appear, the railroad bridge and a slender bridge for Parker Mill Road.

Just before passing under the bridges, Y. glimpsed this finger of river leading into the trees and covered with lily pads. A swan family was here. The papa swan made a curious sawing-coughing cry. Y. plans to hang out here in the finger tomorrow so as to elude any Sunday boatpeople. A peaceful and timeless spot.

One bridge patron was apparently unimpressed with his bridge experience.

Superior Pond is a vast sheet of water with at least two big mats of waterlilies in it. Several expensive homes line the pond. Y. didn't venture too far into the pond, since she had a return journey ahead of her.

There are several private docks dotted around the pond, some with a stored canoe or two handy.
Ypsidixit rowed upstream, past Moss Island, and moored in the shade. She read some of Faulkner/s The Hamlet, nibbled on cheese, and fished. It was a timeless spot. Y. hung in a zone between sleep and waking as she read about the vile Snopes infiltrating Frenchman's Bend.
As the sun fell, Y. reluctantly cast off and drifted down to Moss Island, where she packed up her kit to go home. Thank you, River Spirit, for granting me a day of peace and dazzling beauty and quiet.

As it turns out, the Pequod has a mere inch of draft, so I can glide into the shallowest shallows without worry (though I kept an eye out for snags and submerged branches). Cant wait to go back tomorrow.

You mis identify the bridgesd my lady

Oops, I beg your pardon. What bridges are those? My map says they're the railroad bridge and the car bridge for Parker Mill County Park Road.
Posted by: Laura at 30 juli 2005 22:41
At "This Place Sucks" there's a path of sorts between the 2 bridges. May I ask, is that where you entered the river? Looked like a path of sorts there, between the bridges (north side of the river).

Note: The road bridge, for Parker Mill County Park Road, is for a road that is originally named Stark Strasse Rd. I wonder if that is the source of the confusion.

I think what Annihilate This Week did was have someone drive him down Stark Strasse and drop him off with his boat at the bridges (RR and car). Stark Strasse is a private road and you will get hassled if you try to park a car on it.
If you were to ride a bike along the rocks next to the tracks (I've done it, but it's jarring and you need fat tires), you could get your boat etc. there. You could also ride down Stark Strasse, but brace yourself for the red faced rich babies and their whining.
There is good walleye and smallmouth fishing at the bridges

If I had my way, I’d shuffle off to Buffalo;
Sit by the lake, and watch the world go by.
Ladies in the sun, listenin’ to the radio,
Like flowers on the sand, a rainbow in my mind.

OK, it is Stark Strasse Road. Private? How can a road become private? I would not want to be hassled by red-faced rich babies though. One wonders why they'd have a big, important problem with people just trying to boat peacably.
I went along the northern edge of the pond. Several homes in a row there have kept the area wild. On the corner a few houses down it's all cleared out with some but not a lot of trees and a big lawn. It's their property, Heaven knows, but just in my personal opinion it looks much better wild.

Wow. That is awesome that you have a boat that you can trailer on your bike. How long does it take to blow up once you get to the river?
Posted by: lynne at 01 augustus 2005 12:33
Thanks Lynne. About 10 minutes. There is a foot bellows about the size of a fire bellows, so it pumps up the 3 main chambers pretty fast.
But I'd like to find a better put-in spot for more or less the same area of river. A grassy bit of lawn somewhere around the Superior Pond area (but avoiding the Stark Strasse area). Have to keep my eyes open.

I haven't been up to anything today. I can't be bothered with anything recently. Nothing seems worth thinking about. I haven't gotten anything done recently, but oh well. Not much noteworthy going on worth mentioning.

I've just been staying at home not getting anything done. I've basically been doing nothing worth mentioning. My life's been pretty unremarkable these days. Eh.
