TURF TIPS: A kind reader sends a helpful link to some fascinating lawn care info:

"I know you blog about hippie stuff like "plants" so I thought you might be interested in this. I don't have much use for lawn care tips since I live in an apartment and am a long time supporter of the Pave The Earth and Chrome the Moon campaigns, but this made it to http://del.icio.us/popular so I thought I'd pass it along."

In the page, you will learn that dandelions live 5 years (!) and which weeds have roots that go 30 feet down. This link comes at a crucial time: Ypsidixit's lawn is on the scabby side. I bought some Lawn Aeration Sandals and walked all over the lawn--at night, that is--and I think that successfully killed off the last struggling blades. Sigh.

Another way to think of it is let 80=average human lifespan in years (5=dandelion lifetime). 5x=80; x thus equals 16. 16 x 37=I'm 592 in dandelion years. Zowie.

I have the spiked sandals as well. They work pretty weel. I think it is best to use them after the ground is wet after a rain or the day after. But they tend to clump up then. So you have to stomp on concrete to get the clogs off. But they are good for hard packed areas where grass doesn't do well. Make a thousand holes, then scatter seed.

That sounds like a good way to use them. They're in the garage; I may break them out & give them another whirl (already have seed, too).

Yes. It was way out in the front, after all. If it had been behind the front fence or in the back I wouldn't have cared.

Of course, there's enough ambient light that, had anyone looked, they would have seen me skulking around the perimeter of my yard for no apparent reason, so I guess I shouldn't worry about it & just aerate my lawn with dignity, in full sun.

The strapping is ok but I want to bolt them to an old pair of boots to make them work better and have better/quicker release. They work well for Iraqi prisons as well. When you need to give someone a good kick in the ass.

I strapped them on over some cheapo-Kmart-mock-Birks that I slop around in all summer. Worked OK.

It did occur to me that they'd be a fearsome weapon when kickboxing.

Actually beer is a major ingredient in "America's master gardener" Jerry Baker's various lawn tonics. So if a little slops onto the lawn, no worries.

Nice links. I didnt know that cutting the lawn high doesnt mean that one has to mow more often. I guess I will give it a shot.

I can't seem to keep the spiking sandals from falling off of my shoes when I am walking. Any advice?

Gary, you've asked the right person.

First, choose shoes with a high exterior traction quotient (ETQ). This is a technical term that refers to the surface texture of all non-sole shoe surface (NSSS). The part you see when you look down at your feet. This surface should be roughened up with a wire brush, the kind you use to take paint off boats. Try this on your nice leather winter boots for best results.

Once the surface is shredded, take spray foam insulation and spray small Hershey's Kiss-sized blobs over the NSSS. Allow to dry, following product specifications. When the foam is setting, insert carriage bolts head-down into the blobs (1 bolt per blob). These are traction levers.

Put the boots and spike sandals on (boots first). Weave the sandal-straps among the traction levers and tighten. Coat the NSSS and sandal-straps with more foam insulation. Allow to dry for 2-4 hours. Take duct tape and wrap around boot, impaling it on the sandal-spikes as you go. One roll will do nicely.

You're all set. Git out there and stomp you some clods, Gary!
