GARDEN NOTES: Things are starting to pick up in the garden.
Past bloom: crocuses. Adios tiny harbingers.
Full bloom: hyacinths, forsythia bushes, weigala (cardinal bush), snowdrops (very late--but on the cold northern side of the house), one lone dandelion in the "hot spot" on the southern side of the house.
Just shy of bloom: 2 purple magnolia trees, ooh, my favorite. The lilac has more buds than I've ever seen, thanks maybe to hard post-bloom pruning last spring (lilacs must be pruned in spring, never in fall). Grape hyacinths. Tulips (6 inches, no blooms yet).
Growing: ivy by side of house. Debating whether or not to have it start growing up the side of the house. Siding damage?
Put big potted hyacinths outside after picking off pile of silver icicles and Christmas balls off one designated as Christmas tree...yes, I've had a Christmas tree sitting around since Christmas. Medium-pruned hyacinths to encourage flowering.
Hard-pruned 2 front-door topiary elms, which grow like wildfire. Hard-pruned elm hedge.
Cleaned muck out of pond and water garden. Refilling pond now. Examined filter--it should last another season.
OK, break's over; time to go back outside and do some more work. I'd love to know what's going on in your garden on this gloriously warm day.

One of these days I am going to do something with my yard. My lilac tree needs some serious pruning. I should do it when the flowers are done, no?

You are exactly right--you should do it when the flowers are done, say, mid-May.

Daffodils. Bright lemon-yellow daffodils.
The Japanese maples have small buds.
Various other as-yet-unknown green things sprouting around the house.

Sounds lovely. I have some daffs that are just starting to bloom--just a few, cream colored ones.

Basically nothing seems worth thinking about. I haven't been up to much these days. I just don't have much to say right now. I can't be bothered with anything , but whatever.
